Q&A: PHOBIA [TAKEN FROM DOGS ON ACID]

khal: While you, as of late, have been coming into the light with your releases on Renegade, as well as your Horsemen affiliation, you have been putting tunes out for a few years now. How did you get started producing, and what was your evolution from labels like Flex to Renegade Hardware?

Phobia: I started producing around 2000 through a friend who had a sampler and was working with L Double down at Flex who were based near where I was living. I just picked up the bug really after sitting in the studio with him and saved up the money to buy a sampler - it just snowballed from there and that led to my first release on Flex in 2001. In terms of working with Hardware, that was all thanks to Verse, Loxy & Keaton who got my music to Clayton down at Hardware - I was just sending them tracks to get feedback really, but Clayton was into one of the tracks called ''Positive Vibes'' and he put that on the Paranoia 2 EP.

khal: One of the reasons many fans dig you is because of your ability to switch up styles. I for one got into you through tunes like ''Look for Me'', and was kind of surprised when you dropped ''Revelations'' on the Apocalypse album. Do you approach a tune saying ''I want to make something for Renegade'', and vice versa?

Phobia: Yeh, I do kind of go into each track with a different mindset. Obviously the samples I would use for a Renegade track and a Hardware track are quite different so from the off the approach is different really. Although I do start some tracks with the intention of making one type of tune and it ends up being another - you never can tell sometimes.

khal: With such a varied sound, who do you consider some of your idols, music production wise?

Phobia: There's too many to mention really! I mean DnB wise it's the obvious ones really - Calibre, Commix, Calyx & Teebee, Keaton, Spirit, Hive - lots of people for different reasons. Outside of DnB at the moment I'm really feeling 9th Wonder's hip hop production and Jamie Liddell who is an amazing vocalist and producer signed to Warp - a little skinny white guy who sounds like the bastard son of Otis Reading & Stevie Wonder.

khal: Some of your first releases were collaborations, with guys like Enjay and Piper. Since then, though, you are doing things by yourself. Do you prefer working alone? Are there any collaborations coming from you in the future?

Phobia: It really does depend on who's is about at the time - that's how a lot of the collabs come about. I wouldn't say I prefer working alone, but it's just how it happens 99% of the time. With regard to future collabs, I've just finished a thing with Loxy called ''Excalibre'' and I'm working with a guy called Jubei from Emcee on various bit and bobs. Craggz & PF and I will also be doing something for an EP on their label Product and more things with Skitty should happen in the future.

khal: Word is you have a solo EP dropping on Renegade Hardware soon; can you break down what that's going to sound like? Is there any certain ''theme'' running through it, or is it just a collection of dope tracks?

Phobia: Yeh the EP is coming out after the Carpe Diem LP in April. It's called 'All Points North' - just a little nod to my northern roots! Sound wise, I wanted it to be a representation of me as a DJ really and cover a few different styles within the scope of Hardware. So, there's a rolling tune on there called ''Creep'', a heavier thing called ''The Messenger'', a more ''mainstream'' track - ''All Points North'' and finally a remix of my ''Warlock'' track from the Guerilla Warfare album by Friction. If you see me DJ, I really do play across the board; at Hardware I will play quite hard but if you see me at my night Turbulence I'll play everything from Commix to Universal Project and everything in between so I wanted my EP to show that as much as possible.

khal: Do you produce your music using software or hardware? What's your studio setup like?

Phobia: My setup is a combination of both really. I think that's the secret these days, hardware wise I mix everything through an old Spirit desk and use a TL Audio valve processor to fatten up beats and lead sounds. Software wise it's the usual suspects running on a PC.

khal: Judging from your 1Xtra mix, as well as the B2B set you and Skitty did a while back, you are pretty nimble on the decks as well! How long have you been spinning, and what do you look for when building a set?

Phobia: I've been DJ'ing for probably around 10 years now although only playing out for 7 or 8. I like to just cover a lot of different styles where possible - like I said before, if I'm down at Hardware B2B with Skitty for an hour it's kind of a case of play for impact as effectively you have about half an hour to do your thing. At my night Turbulence I usually play for two hours so that allows me to drift in and out of different styles. I like to have sections where I'll play a bit harder, or a bit deeper or maybe drop into some soulful vibes - just mix it up and keep it interesting hopefully.

khal: Aside from the ''All Points North'' EP, what else do you have in the pipeline for 2006, release wise?

Phobia: Apart from the EP, I've just remixed ''Need U'' (originally by Ink & Dylan) which will be coming on Ink's solo EP on Hardware later in the year. I'm also doing a 12'' for Violence - we've confirmed one side to it but I'm just working away on the flip at the moment. I'm also doing a 12'' for Horizons later this year and Verse and I are going to try and get in the studio to do a collab for Crunch. Myself and Jubei have also just done an instrumental for MC Fats which if all works out should be coming on his new album on True Playaz. Other than that, I've got stuff forthcoming on Karma, Renegade and more stuff for Hardware and Universal Project.

khal: Do you ever see yourself going the route that many producers do, and establishing your own label? Why or why not?

Phobia: Yeh, I definitely want to start a label - it's all a question of timing though. There's a hell of a lot of labels out there at the moment so I wouldn't want to do anything until I was 100% that it would add something to what's already there rather than just being ''another'' label.

khal: If you weren't producing D&B, what would you be doing with your free time?

Phobia: Who knows! I did my degree in Computer Science so I'd probably be sat behind a desk messing with a computer - not much different to now really!
